5 COMMON MISTAKES NEWBIES MAKE IN MILE HIGH PARAGLIDING AND HOW TO AVOID THEM

You just signed up for your first Mile High Paragliding tandem or solo course. The views from 15,000 feet look incredible, but the internet is full of advice that sounds smart—until it gets you in trouble. Some of this “wisdom” is flat-out dangerous. Here are five myths new pilots swallow whole, why they’re wrong, and what to do instead.

YOU DON’T NEED TO CHECK THE WIND BEFORE LAUNCH—THE INSTRUCTOR WILL HANDLE IT

Newbies assume the instructor or launch marshal will stop them if the wind is bad. They show up in sneakers, check their phone for Instagram shots, and expect a green light every time. This is a fast track to a blown launch or a violent collapse.

Wind direction and speed change in minutes at high-altitude sites like Lookout Mountain. A 5 mph shift can turn a smooth ridge lift into rotor that flips your wing before you’re off the ground. Instructors watch the wind, but they can’t read your mind. If you’re not looking at the telltales or feeling the breeze on your face, you’re f blind.

Check the wind yourself. Use a handheld anemometer or watch the wind sock every 10 minutes. If the sock is limp or pointing sideways, don’t launch. If gusts exceed 12 mph, wait. Your instructor will respect you for it.

LIGHTWEIGHT PILOTS CAN FLY SMALLER WINGS WITHOUT TRAINING

New pilots under 140 pounds see a 22 m² wing and think, “This is made for me.” They skip the recommended 26 m² school wing because it looks “too big” and assume they’ll just steer faster. This is a recipe for over-control and stalls.

Smaller wings have faster roll rates and quicker reactions. A 22 m² wing can turn 90 degrees in under two seconds—twice as fast as a 26 m² wing. Light pilots who haven’t mastered weight-shift and brake coordination will over-correct, inducing oscillations that can lead to collapses. At 15,000 feet, a collapse means a 500-foot plummet before recovery.

Fly the wing your instructor assigns. If you’re under 140 pounds, start on a 26 m² wing and log 20 hours before downsizing. Use a variometer to monitor sink rates—small wings sink faster, which means less time to react.

THERMALS ARE JUST “HOT AIR”—IGNORE THEM AND YOU’LL STAY SAFE

New pilots hear “thermals” and picture a gentle updraft. They avoid them entirely, thinking they’re only for experts. This keeps them stuck in ridge lift, fighting sink, and landing early. Thermals aren’t optional—they’re the engine of high-altitude flight.

Thermals at Mile High sites like Golden Gate Canyon aren’t smooth bubbles. They’re turbulent columns that can shear off at 1,000 feet per minute. But avoiding them means missing the lift that carries you to 15,000 feet. New pilots who refuse to thermal end up scratching along the ridge, burning fuel, and landing in the first field they see.

Learn to thermal on day one. Start in weak lift (2-3 m/s) and practice 360-degree turns with minimal brake input. Use your vario to find the core—when the beep pitch rises, you’re in. If the wing collapses, release the brakes and let it re-inflate. Thermals are how you stay up, not how you crash.

YOU CAN JUDGE ALTITUDE BY LOOKING DOWN

New pilots glance at the ground and think, “I’m high enough.” They don’t check their altimeter because it feels “too technical.” This is how pilots misjudge landing zones and end up in power lines or trees.

At 15,000 feet, the ground looks deceptively close. A football field from that height appears the size of a postage stamp. Without an altimeter, you’ll misjudge your descent rate and overshoot the landing zone. At Mile High sites, the LZ is often a small meadow surrounded by obstacles. One wrong turn and you’re in the woods.

Use your altimeter religiously. Set it to QNH (local pressure) before launch. Check it every 30 seconds during descent. If you’re at 5,000 feet and descending at 3 m/s, you have less than three minutes to land. Don’t guess—measure.

GEAR FAILURES ARE RARE, SO PRE-FLIGHT CHECKS ARE OPTIONAL

New pilots skip pre-flight checks because “nothing ever breaks.” They assume the wing, harness, and reserve are fine because they flew yesterday. This is how pilots launch with a tangled line or a disconnected speed system.

Paragliding gear fails in ways you can’t see. A single frayed line can snap mid-flight, causing an asymmetric collapse. A loose karabiner can detach in turbulence. At 15,000 feet, you won’t notice until it’s too late. Pre-flight checks take five minutes and catch 90% of issues.

Run the check every time. Start with the wing: lines untangled, risers free of twists, maillons tight. Check the harness: leg straps secure, reserve pin in place, speed system connected. Test the radio and vario. If anything feels off, abort. Five minutes now saves your life later.

Mile High Paragliding isn’t a theme park ride. The air doesn’t care if you’re a newbie. These myths aren’t just wrong—they’re dangerous. Check the wind, fly the right wing, thermal early, use your altimeter, and inspect your gear. Do these, and you’ll stay up Mile High Paragliding.
